Harvey Mudd College Hosts First-Ever Generative AI Fair

Harvey Mudd College Hosts First-Ever Generative AI Fair: What Educators and Students Learned

Harvey Mudd College's Computing and Information Services (CIS) department made history by hosting their inaugural Generative AI Fair on October 22, 2024. The event drew faculty, staff, and students eager to explore the latest AI tools transforming education and creativity.

The fair featured four interactive stations showcasing different aspects of generative AI, from creative applications to coding assistance. Participants could experience hands-on demonstrations while enjoying food, games, and prizes in a welcoming environment.

Key Learning Stations and Tools Demonstrated

Google Gemini Integration Station
Elizabeth Hodas demonstrated Google Gemini Chat and its upcoming integration with Google Workspace tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The college is waiting for enhanced privacy protections before rolling out Gemini Chat campus-wide, ensuring student data remains protected under FERPA guidelines.

Creative AI Applications
James Sadler and Gilbert Gutierrez showcased creative tools including Midjourney for text-to-image generation and Suno for text-to-music creation. Most creative AI platforms offer free tiers with daily prompt limits, with upgrade options for heavy users.

Prompt Engineering Workshop
Yi Luo's station taught effective prompt crafting techniques. Participants learned to develop clear, concise prompts using a structured approach - spinning a category wheel, writing initial prompts, then refining them using proven techniques for better AI outputs.

AI-Powered Coding
Aashita Kesarwani and Jonathan Ebueng demonstrated coding with AI using Gemini in Google Colab and GitHub Copilot. Students learned to generate code from plain English instructions and create visual art using the p5js programming library.

Interactive Elements Drive Engagement

The event included a Kahoot trivia game testing AI knowledge and an AI Dungeon text adventure demonstration. A stamp card system rewarded participation with prizes including flash drives and two-month Gemini Education licenses.

The college plans to continue exploring this "fascinating, and controversial" topic with upcoming faculty panels and educational presentations.
