Global AI Prompt Searches Surge as Users Seek Better AI Skills

The world has moved beyond just experimenting with AI tools—people are now actively searching for ways to master them. A new Adobe Express study reveals that from January 2023 to January 2024, global searches for AI prompts skyrocketed, with the phrase "prompts for ChatGPT" alone generating over 70,000 searches worldwide.

The United States dominated these searches, followed by India and Germany, signaling that the AI awareness phase is over. We're now in what experts call the "optimization era" where users want strategic guidance on crafting better prompts for sharper, more useful AI outputs.

Key Findings from the Adobe Study

ChatGPT leads but competition is growing: While ChatGPT remains the undisputed leader in AI prompt searches, Midjourney claimed second place in the U.S., with Adobe Firefly ranking third. Firefly's strong showing is particularly noteworthy since it targets design-specific use cases like marketing materials and branded imagery.

Americans want to learn: Nearly 80% of 1,000 surveyed U.S. adults expressed interest in improving their prompting skills, with over two-thirds willing to take a course. The most desired learning topic was prompt engineering for different outputs and tools (78%).

Video learning preferred: Pre-recorded video lessons were the top choice for learning format (53%), followed by interactive workshops (19%) and live online classes (17%).

What This Means for Your Business

For marketers and business leaders, this trend signals that prompt literacy is becoming a core creative skill. Teams should consider:

  • Investing in prompt training as a strategic capability like copywriting or design
  • Mapping specific AI tools to outcomes (ChatGPT for text, Firefly for design, Midjourney for abstract creativity)
  • Tracking search trends as insights into what audiences are experimenting with

The shift from curiosity to optimization shows that AI tools are moving from experimental to essential. Organizations that develop prompt fluency now will have a competitive edge as this technology becomes table stakes.
