Generative AI Delivers 3.7x ROI for Strategic Business Adopters, New IDC Study Reveals

A comprehensive study by the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows that businesses taking a strategic approach to generative AI integration are seeing remarkable returns on investment, fundamentally changing how companies view AI from experimental tool to essential business asset.

The IDC report, titled "2024 Business Opportunity of AI: Generative AI Delivering New Business Value and Increasing ROI," reveals that generative AI delivers an average return of 3.7 times the investment per dollar spent. Top-performing organizations using generative AI achieve even higher returns with an average ROI of $10.3.

Industry ROI Rankings Show Financial Services Leading

The study identifies clear winners across sectors for generative AI implementation:

  • Financial Services leads with the highest ROI
  • Media & Telecommunications follows closely
  • Mobility, Retail & Consumer Packaged Goods, Energy, Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Education complete the rankings

Business adoption has surged dramatically, with usage jumping from 55% in 2023 to 75% in 2024, demonstrating growing confidence in AI's ability to drive productivity and economic growth.

Current Focus on Productivity, Future Shift to Custom Solutions

The research shows that 92% of AI users currently leverage the technology for productivity gains, with 43% citing productivity use cases as delivering the greatest ROI. Tools like Microsoft Copilot are enhancing individual productivity by automating routine tasks and enabling creative workflows.

However, the landscape is expected to evolve significantly over the next 24 months, with companies shifting toward functional and industry-specific applications, including custom copilots and AI agents tailored to specific business processes.

Challenges Remain Despite Strong Returns

The study identifies persistent barriers to AI adoption:

  • 30% of respondents lack specialized AI skills in-house
  • 26% report insufficient employee skills for learning and working with AI
  • Data security concerns continue to challenge implementation

Microsoft is addressing these challenges through targeted training programs and Responsible AI initiatives focused on security, transparency, and compliance.

"Generative AI has moved from the experimental to the essential," said Zubin Chagpar, Senior Director and Business Group Leader for Modern Work & Surface Devices at Microsoft CEMA. The findings underscore the importance of strategic AI investment for creating competitive advantage in today's business environment.
