New data from the UK Office for National Statistics shows AI adoption among British businesses has nearly tripled in under three years. The headline figure hides a more measured reality: most organizations are experimenting with AI in isolation rather than embedding it as a strategic capability.

The ONS found that 35% of UK businesses with 10 or more employees used at least one AI technology in June 2026, up from around 12% in late 2023. Adoption rises sharply with company size: 49% of businesses with 250 or more employees use AI, compared to 28% of those with fewer than 10.

The average number of AI technologies per adopting business grew only from 1.4 to 1.6 since 2023. Just 10% of businesses using AI describe their deployment as extensive. Large language models lead adoption, used primarily for content drafting, summarization, and routine task handling.
