Shopify's AI-Driven Commerce Push Triples Traffic and Lifts Q2 Profit to $1.5B
Shopify posted US$1.5 billion in net profit for its second quarter of 2026, a 66% jump from US$906 million a year earlier, driven largely by a surge in AI-assisted shopping and merchant activity. The results pushed the company's share price up nearly 19%, reaching $206.14.
The e-commerce platform reported that AI-generated traffic and purchases to Shopify-powered businesses tripled year-over-year in Q2. Daily usage of Sidekick, Shopify's AI sales advisor for merchants, was 3.6 times higher than the same period last year. Sidekick now handles about 34 million conversations per quarter and helped produce more than 36,000 custom apps in Q2, up from 12,000 in Q1.
President Harley Finkelstein framed the results as proof that AI is reshaping commerce fundamentally. "Whether commerce is handled by humans or agents, whether stores are built by people or AI, Shopify runs underneath it all," he told analysts.
Key Takeaways:
- Total revenue reached US$3.58 billion, up 34% from US$2.68 billion a year ago, with merchant solutions contributing US$2.78 billion of that total.
- AI enables more precise product discovery — where traditional keyword search returns popular results, AI agents understand context like vehicle dimensions or specific household constraints.
- Shopify expects low-thirties percentage revenue growth year-over-year going forward, signaling continued AI-led momentum.
