Reddit CEO Says Google AI Overviews Are Failing the Open Web and Threatening a $60M Deal

The growing tension between AI-powered search and the publishers who feed it broke into the open this week. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman publicly criticized Google's AI Overviews feature, arguing it has not delivered meaningful value for the broader web ecosystem — and his platform is weighing whether to walk away from its $60 million licensing deal with the search giant.

Speaking around Reddit's latest earnings report, Huffman drew a sharp contrast: "10 blue links has driven tremendous value and growth to the broader ecosystem... from where we sit, AI Overviews has yet to make a similar level of positive impact."

The Core Complaint

The issue is structural. Publishers and platforms like Reddit have historically depended on referral traffic from Google's traditional search results. AI Overviews answers queries directly, reducing the click-through that drives that traffic. Worse, publishers cannot opt out of having their content used in AI Overviews without also losing placement in traditional search results — making it an all-or-nothing arrangement.

Huffman framed Reddit's value in explicit opposition to AI summarization: "AI compresses the internet into summaries. Reddit delivers the opposite: deep discussions, passionate debates, and lived experiences."

A Broader Publisher Revolt

Reddit is not alone. The Wall Street Journal reported that The Economist, Reuters, Politico, and USA Today are also exploring cutting ties with Google over similar concerns. The $60M Reddit-Google licensing deal — struck to allow Google to train AI on Reddit content — now appears to be at risk.

A Pew Research survey referenced in the article found that Google AI Overviews has slashed clicks to external websites by nearly half.
