Enterprise GenAI Investment Surges: What 2024 Data Reveals About AI ROI and Use Cases

Enterprise GenAI Investment Surges: What 2024 Data Reveals About AI ROI and Use Cases

The generative AI market is reaching a tipping point, with enterprises investing heavily and expecting major returns. According to Information Services Group's (ISG) comprehensive 2024 State of The Generative AI Market report, companies are not only spending big but also seeing impressive productivity gains from their AI initiatives.

The numbers tell a compelling story: enterprises are spending an average of $2.6 million on their single largest GenAI use case in 2024, with plans to increase overall GenAI spending by 50 percent in 2025. This massive investment reflects growing confidence in AI's ability to drive business value.

Top GenAI Use Cases Delivering Results

The research reveals a clear divide between where companies invest most heavily and which applications they deploy most commonly.

Highest investment use cases center on customer-facing applications:

  • Customer service chatbots lead at 53 percent of enterprises
  • Visual/audio content generation at 41 percent
  • Customer service support at 41 percent

Most commonly implemented use cases focus on operational efficiency:

  • Automated IT testing leads at 43 percent adoption
  • HR support at 35 percent
  • Customer communications at 33 percent

The MSP Partnership Advantage

A striking 65 percent of enterprises rely on managed service providers (MSPs) to implement their GenAI initiatives, rather than going it alone. Companies cite expertise gaps and the need for strategic AI management as key drivers for seeking external support.

Major Productivity Gains Already Emerging

The productivity benefits are tangible. GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT are driving significant gains in software development, with 70 percent of enterprises using ChatGPT for development activities. ISG's research shows GenAI delivers productivity improvements of 30-42 percent in development workflows.

AIOps (AI for IT Operations) shows even more dramatic results, leading to 28-50 percent efficiency increases through automated monitoring, predictive maintenance, and resource optimization.

Key Challenges Remain

Despite the enthusiasm, enterprises face significant hurdles. The biggest barrier is skills shortage, with 56 percent of companies citing lack of AI expertise as their primary challenge. Data privacy and security concerns follow at 39 percent, along with legacy infrastructure limitations.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Emerging use cases for 2025 signal a shift toward more strategic applications. Marketing research and customer insights, software code generation, and supply chain optimization are gaining traction as companies move beyond basic automation to more sophisticated AI implementations.

With enterprises already running an average of 151 GenAI applications and planning to expand to 356 by end of 2025, the AI transformation is accelerating rapidly. The question for business leaders isn't whether to invest in GenAI, but how quickly they can build the expertise and infrastructure to compete effectively.
