Large Enterprises Embrace Hyperautomation to Transform Operations, New Gartner Study Reveals

Major companies are doubling down on hyperautomation as they race to modernize their operations. According to new research from Gartner, 90% of large enterprises now prioritize hyperautomation initiatives, though most still struggle with measuring success.

The technology research firm predicts that by 2026, 30% of enterprises will have automated more than half of their network activities - a dramatic jump from under 10% in mid-2023. This surge reflects growing pressure on companies to improve operational efficiency and resilience.

What Is Driving This Automation Push?

Hyperautomation combines multiple technologies including AI, machine learning, and robotic process automation to create comprehensive automation solutions. Companies are particularly drawn to intelligent automation (IA), which applies AI techniques like generative AI to automate decision-making processes.

Key motivations for enterprises include:

  • Operational resilience - Reducing dependency on manual processes that can fail during disruptions
  • Data processing capabilities - Autonomously handling increasingly large volumes of information
  • Business agility - Responding faster to market changes and customer demands

The GenAI Effect

The rise of generative AI has reinvigorated interest in hyperautomation since 2022. "Hyperautomation has seen a resurgence in interest and demand since the fervor of generative AI," the report notes. This combination has increased market demand for intelligent automation platforms.

Chris Saunderson, senior director analyst at Gartner, explains that "technology providers that offer best-of-breed tools for AI for IT operations (AIOps), application performance monitoring and generative AI will influence IA."

The Challenge: Measurement Gap

Despite widespread adoption, fewer than 20% of large enterprises have mastered measuring their hyperautomation initiatives. This measurement gap suggests many companies are investing heavily without clear metrics for success.

Frances Karamouzis, distinguished vice president analyst at Gartner, notes that "hyperautomation initiatives are often an integral part of a larger technology roadmap that includes systems of record on one end of the spectrum, and AI and generative AI on the other."

For business leaders, this trend signals the need to develop robust measurement frameworks before launching automation projects.
