SAP Creates Separate Business AI and Autonomous Suite Divisions in Major Leadership Restructure

July 1, 2026
5 min read

SAP moved decisively on its enterprise AI roadmap on July 1, 2026, reorganizing its product and engineering leadership to create two dedicated organizations: one for its Business AI Platform and one for its Autonomous Suite. The changes signal SAP's intent to treat AI platform development and AI-powered business applications as distinct strategic priorities — each with dedicated executive ownership.

The restructuring places Business AI Platform, data, analytics, and CTO functions under Extended Board Member Philipp Herzig, while Extended Board Member Manoj Swaminathan will lead the newly formed Autonomous Suite spanning finance, supply chain, human resources, customer experience, and Cloud ERP Private. Both report directly to CEO Christian Klein during the transition.

Michael Ameling, Chief Product Officer for SAP BTP and an Extended Board member, will depart SAP as part of the transition.

What's Inside Each New Organization

  • Business AI Platform (Herzig): BTP technologies, data and analytics, Business Transformation Management, and CTO functions — the foundational AI architecture layer
  • Autonomous Suite (Swaminathan): Finance & Spend Management, Supply Chain, Human Capital Management, Customer Experience, and Cloud ERP Private — the enterprise application layer

SAP is also establishing a dedicated Industry AI unit under Dominic Metzger within its Strategy and Operations organization, and moving AI-focused marketing teams for Business AI Platform, Joule, and Autonomous Suite into the Global Marketing organization.

The restructuring follows SAP's Sapphire 2026 conference, where the company outlined plans to embed AI agents more deeply across enterprise applications as part of its Autonomous Enterprise strategy.
