Business AI Adoption Outpaces Consumers as Trust Gap Widens, VML 2026 Report Finds
Businesses are racing to deploy AI across commerce and customer experience — but consumers are pumping the brakes, according to VML's 10th annual Future Shopper report, a landmark global study released September 21, 2026.
The core finding: While 82% of consumers have used AI, adoption is concentrated in everyday tasks. Shoppers are not letting AI make decisions for them — especially purchasing decisions.
Key data from the Future Shopper report:
- 58% of shoppers cross-check AI-generated product recommendations before buying
- 49% say AI-generated product imagery reduces trust in a brand
- 53% worry AI shopping tools are commercially influenced by brands
- 33% would not allow AI to make purchases on their behalf
- 44% say overall search quality has declined over the past year
Economic pressure is driving the gap. Six in ten consumers report greater financial anxiety than ever before, leading shoppers to prioritize value, availability, and frictionless experiences over AI-powered novelty.
"Consumers are embracing AI and digital commerce, but they're also driven by financial pressure and growing intentionality in who they trust," said Brent Taylor, global CEO of WPP Commerce. "Long-term loyalty will need to earn consumer confidence at every stage of the customer journey through transparency, consistency, and exceptional customer experience."
Traditional content creators are also losing ground — influence from creators dropped year-over-year from 15% to 13% — while AI tools are emerging as a scrutinized but growing source of recommendations.
For AI strategy leaders, the signal is clear: consumers will engage with AI that serves them, but they will not surrender autonomy to it. Building trust, not just deploying tools, is the competitive differentiator heading into 2027.
