McKinsey's 2026 Tech Trends Report: AI Agents, Energy Crunch, and the Agentic Era Reshaping Business Strategy

The technology story of 2026 is no longer unfolding on screens alone. According to McKinsey's sixth annual Technology Trends Outlook, published September 15, 2026, innovation is now accelerating in physical systems: power grids, chips, intelligent robots, agentic software, and satellites. The report examines 14 technology trends across three categories: the AI revolution, compute and connectivity frontiers, and cutting-edge engineering.

AI is the thread connecting all of it. Four trends are AI-specific, but AI also amplifies the remaining ten. Most striking: Agentic AI job postings surged +952% between 2024 and 2025, with $9.9 billion in equity investment in 2025 alone. Agentic software development, in which LLM-powered systems autonomously plan, code, and deploy, drew another $4.9 billion and saw +221% job growth.
