WIPO: GenAI Patents Nearly Doubled in 2025, Signaling Mass Deployment

A new WIPO report reveals that generative AI patent filings are growing at a pace that signals the technology has already crossed from early adoption into mainstream commercial deployment.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) report on generative AI patents, the number of GenAI patent families nearly doubled between 2024 and 2025, rising from 18,862 to 37,808. More than 56,000 new patent families were recorded in 2024-2025 combined, exceeding the entire preceding decade of GenAI patents. GenAI now accounts for 8.7% of all AI patent families, up from 6.1% in 2023.
