ChatGPT Group Chats: New Tools for Shared Conversations

ChatGPT Group Chats: New Tools for Shared Conversations

ChatGPT is rolling out a new pilot feature that lets multiple people, plus ChatGPT, collaborate in the same conversation across mobile and web.

What Group Chats Let You Do

Group chats create a shared space where friends, family, or coworkers can:

  • Plan events like group dinners or weekend trips, while ChatGPT compares options, builds itineraries, and creates packing lists.
  • Work on creative or practical projects together, such as garden designs or apartment decor.
  • Collaborate on school or work tasks by sharing articles, notes, and questions for ChatGPT to summarize and organize.

The feature is initially available to logged‑in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

How It Works

  • Start a group by tapping the people icon in any new or existing chat.
  • Adding people to an existing chat creates a new group copy so your original one stays private.
  • You can invite 1–20 people via a link, set up a profile (name, username, photo), and find group chats in a dedicated sidebar section.
  • ChatGPT responses use GPT‑5.1 Auto and support search, image and file uploads, image generation, and dictation. More details are in the OpenAI help center.

ChatGPT now also:

  • Decides when to speak or stay quiet based on context.
  • Responds when mentioned by name.
  • Reacts with emojis and can reference profile photos for personalized images.

Privacy, Safety, and Control

  • Group chats are separate from your private chats; personal memory is not used or created.
  • You must accept invitations, can see all participants, and can leave anytime.
  • Group members can remove others, except the creator (who can only leave themselves).
  • For users under 18, exposure to sensitive content is reduced, and parents can turn group chats off through parental controls.

As OpenAI pilots this feature, they plan to refine it based on early feedback and expand shared experiences in ChatGPT over time. Now may be a good moment to think about how collaborative AI chats could fit into your personal, family, or work routines.
