Netflix Deployed Generative AI Across 300 Productions in 2026: What It Signals for Content and Advertising

Netflix confirmed that generative AI workflows were used in approximately 300 of its films and series during 2026, marking the shift from pilot projects to standard production practice. Most activity occurred in post-production, though the company is now applying AI from initial concept through final delivery.

Production: Faster, Cheaper, More Visual Ambition

Netflix is using generative AI to create complex visual sequences at lower cost and on faster timelines than traditional methods. Three productions highlight the scope:

  • Glory (India): AI-enhanced crowd and battle scenes
  • Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri (Brazil): historical sequence work
  • The American Experiment (U.S.): approximately 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage, produced twice as fast and at half the cost of previous production methods

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said those savings are intended to be reinvested into additional programming, not used to reduce the content budget.

Beyond Production: AI Across the Business

Netflix is also deploying AI outside content creation:

  • Discovery and search: Large language models power title discovery, viewer preference modeling, and voice and natural-language search.
  • Advertising: AI is applied across campaign planning, creative production, management, optimization, and reporting. Netflix expects advertising revenue to roughly double to $3 billion in 2026.
  • Programmatic access: Automation of transaction workflows to make advertising inventory accessible to smaller buyers.

Netflix reported Q2 revenue of $12.56 billion, up 13.4% year over year, with operating margin of 33.4%. The breadth of AI use across hundreds of titles and multiple business units suggests generative AI has become structural at Netflix, not experimental.
