Federal Health Agency Launches Comprehensive AI Strategy to Modernize Healthcare Operations
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is making artificial intelligence a core part of its operations with a new strategy aimed at transforming how the federal government delivers healthcare and human services. This groundbreaking approach marks the first time HHS has unified all its divisions under one AI infrastructure plan.
The HHS AI Strategy focuses on integrating AI across internal operations, research, and public health initiatives. Led by Acting Chief AI Officer Clark Minor, the strategy delivers on the Trump Administration's AI Action Plan and guidance from the Office of Management and Budget.
Five Key Areas of Focus
The strategy centers on five main pillars designed to maximize AI's impact across the department:
- Governance and Risk Management: Building public trust through proper oversight
- Infrastructure Development: Creating platforms that meet user needs
- Workforce Enhancement: Reducing administrative burden while developing AI skills
- Research Excellence: Supporting gold-standard science and reproducibility
- Healthcare Modernization: Improving care delivery and public health outcomes
Historic "OneHHS" Collaboration
For the first time in HHS history, all major divisions will work together on AI development. This includes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and National Institutes of Health (NIH). This unified approach aims to streamline workflows and strengthen cybersecurity across the department.
Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill emphasized that this strategy represents a paradigm shift, stating that AI has the potential to deliver "historic wins for the public—wins that lead to longer, healthier lives."
The strategy also opens doors for private sector partnerships to co-create AI solutions that benefit American healthcare. As healthcare costs continue to rise and access remains a challenge for many Americans, this federal AI initiative could significantly impact how medical services are delivered nationwide.
